St Louis to Kansas City today, and a packed agenda. The aim was to nail the 250 miles in three and a half hours, with a couple of stop-off activities on the way.
I managed to balls it up in at least five ways.
- Overall, the journey took 7 hours…
- …because we headed for the wrong Tipton. I’d naively assumed that because the site I wanted to visit was near Kansas, I’d assumed that it was the Tipton marked out on the left-hand side of the map below. It was only as we got near Independence, Missouri that I checked out the Zip Code and discovered that we’d passed the relevant Tipton 100 miles previously. As I double-backed on the freeway, I could feel Al’s blood pressure and sarcasm levels rising to ‘intolerable’.

- This meant that the proposed trip to the Truman Museum & Library in Independence had to be pushed back to Sunday
- Much to our annoyance, it turns out there are two places called ‘Kansas City’. Not unreasonably, I drove towards Kansas City in the state of Kansas only to be told by my mate Chris that it was the other one, in Missouri. And in fact, it wasn’t even that: it was Independence MO we should be headed for
- We ended up doing 460 miles today, and were two hours late for a wedding.
Tomorrow isn’t looking any less hectic either now.
